How to make really good coffee with an automatic drip coffeemaker?

I am still having problems making good coffee in my automatic drip coffeemaker. It does not seem to matter which model I use, the coffee still tastes too bitter, burnt, and almost greasy. I want the nice full-flavor of the Coffee I can get from a cafe or restaurant, where there is no hint of rancidity or burnt, greasy coffee. Can anyone here help me figure out what I am doing wrong? And how to make good coffee? And maybe what coffee brands are good to start with?

A few possible problems:
1) Most auto drips don’t get hot enough to properly brew coffee (should be around 200F)
2) Canned, preground coffee is already stale when you buy it; whole beans in valve sealed bags are the best (short of roasting your own).
3) Not using enough grounds will cause over extraction, resulting in bitter coffee. The proper amount is 2tbsp per 6oz of water.

If you want to try a cheap way to make good coffee, try this:\
Measure water into a pot and bring to a boil
Remove from heat and add proper amount of grounds to water
Let steep for 4 minutes.
Pour through a fine strainer into your carafe

If you use just the strainer, it will taste rich like from a french press. If your strainer isn’t fine enough, you can put a coffee filter in it. This will give you a milder coffee, but both will taste good if the beans were fresh.

One of the best web sites I use to get information about coffee stuff is The Coffee Meister

Astronaut demos drinking coffee in space

Presented by http://collectSPACE.com — The Source for Space History and Artifacts.

When Dr. Don Pettit lived aboard the International Space Station in 2002, he became known for his “Saturday Morning Science” sessions, during which he would demonstrate really cool, simple microgravity experiments.

Earlier this month, Pettit returned to space, this time as member of space shuttle Endeavour’s crew on a mission to upgrade the outpost. After 10 days of hard work, the STS-126 crew got some time off Sunday morning and Pettit took the opportunity to film a special episode of Saturday, err, Sunday Morning Science.

In his video, which he later narrated for Mission Control, Dr. Pettit demonstrated his take on a zero-gravity coffee cup…

Coffee Houses – Little Known Facts That you Probably Didn’t Know About Coffee Houses

Coffee houses, when you think about it, are very similar to bars and restaurants. Providing coffee, tea, light snacks and lunch type food they offer a great mishmash of both. Besides serving food and beverages, coffee houses are great places to interact socially with other people, read, write, do homework or just pass time.

While one would typically think that coffee houses started in Italy, but that isn’t the case. In fact, since the 16th century they’ve been prominent in the Middle East. People would go to them to drink coffee or tea, listen to music, play games like chess and backgammon and read.

In 1530, the first coffee house opened in Damascus. Shortly thereafter, others started springing up in places like Cairo and Istanbul.

It wasn’t until the 17th century that coffee first made an appearance in Europe. The first recorded coffee house in Italy opened shop in 1645. This was followed by the first coffee house in England, in Oxford, in 1650. After that, they spread like wildfire, hitting America in 1670 in Boston.

Charles II wasn’t a fan of coffee houses, and tried to discourage people in London from going to them by characterizing them as places where the disaffected met and spread scandalous reports concerning the conduct of His Majesty and his Ministers. Instead of keeping people away, people flocked to them.

Coffee houses were open to people of all socioeconomic backgrounds, and became associated with equality. That said, women weren’t allowed into them.

Later on, this obviously ceased to be the case. In American coffee houses in the 1960s, musicians and poets had found a home. Bob Dylan got his start running the coffee house circuit, as did the Beats. Also, many churches used them for outreach purposes, gaining membership and spreading the word of God.

A Good Excuse To Drink More Coffee !

When I was in high school our principal, Mr. Watkins was an avid coffee drinker. And when I say “avid”, I mean nobody stood in between Mr. Watkins and his pot of coffee. Mr. Watkins day wouldn’t start unless he had at least a pot and a half of coffee in his belly. He was a bit high-strung, which the teachers that worked directly ender him blamed his constant “one cup right after the other” coffee drinking mentality. One day the teachers decided to secretly change his regular coffee to decaf in an effort to calm him down. It didn’t work. They didn’t take into consideration that he had just quit smoking weeks earlier. It wasn’t the coffee that made him that way, it was his nervous withdrawals from quitting smoking.

The truth is coffee has very little effects on heavy coffee drinkers like Mr. Watkins. For Individuals who regularly consume coffee/caffeine has no effect on blood pressure. For people who have not consumed caffeine for a certain period of time, drinking coffee can lead to a small, short-lived increase in blood pressure. In fact, if your a coffee drinker with high blood pressure, it wasn’t the coffee that made you that way. My research shows that stopping coffee consumption is of no benefit to people with mild hypertension. There is no evidence to suggest that continued consumption of coffee father compounds hypertension in any diagnosed patients. Actually, regular coffee drinkers don’t even have comparatively higher blood pressure than non Coffee drinkers. As the body quickly becomes tolerant to caffeine’s effects on blood pressure.

You may ask, well, there’s no effect on blood pressure, but what about other conditions like cholesterol or palpitations, what about increased risk for certain types of cancers like ovarian cancer or bladder cancer? No, no, no. In general, people who drink coffee do not have higher cholesterol levels than people who obtain from coffee drinking. Heart palpitations? No. Research shows that individuals may experience palpitations(irregular heartbeats). Irrespective of whether they are consuming coffee or not. Ovarian cancer? No conclusive evidence that coffee/caffeine consumption increases the risk of ovarian cancer. Bladder cancer? In 1990, The International Agency For Research On Cancer evaluated coffee, caffeine, tea, and latte’, after assessing the research, gave coffee the classification 2B which is possibly carcinogenic to the human urinary bladder. Coffee was cleared in all other areas.

Honestly folks, I’ve done an awful lot of research on the effects of coffee and caffeine and I haven’t found anything to raise any suspicion or worry. My conclusion is Mr. Watkins had the right idea all along. So, drink up folks, it isn’t bad for you. And like the title says,” That’s a good excuse to drink more coffee”

As always, I hope this article was both informative and entertaining. Thank you for reading and may GOD bless you always, and in always.

How do you remove the coffee taste from a travel mug?

I have several travel mugs that I often fill with coffee and take with me in the car. The problem is that the cups quickly absorbed the taste of the coffee. Now if I put any other beverage, like tea, in the mugs all I can taste is stale Coffee. I do wash my dishes very well with soap and water, so that is not the problem. It is just that the coffee is so strong I guess? Anyway, Can anyone please tell me how to remove this stale coffee taste from my travel mug?

Use some baking soda and vinegar – it will make a "volcano" effect first. Fill the mugs and then just leave it and let it sit in the cups overnight. That should take care of it.
