Tips to Consider When Shopping for a Coffee and Espresso Maker

Over the course of the past manful of years coffee and espresso makers have gone through a litany of changes. They are now smaller, more compact and also much more feature laden. At the same time more companies have began to make them for home use. More choices and options translates into more items to consider when trying to decide which make and model to bring home.

Consider Simplicity

If all that you are interested in is a good cup of coffee or espresso then consider the simplicity of the machine that you are going to purchase. Remember, that there are plenty of one cup simple coffee brewers on the market. This means that if you are primarily interested in espresso, you have the option of simply buying an espresso maker and a simple one cup coffee maker to use occasionally.

Size Matters

When it comes to coffee and espresso makers, size definitely matters. With Coffee prises predicted to shoot up in the upcoming years, waste can quickly add up into big money losses over the long haul. Remember that it is not hard at all to brew a second pot if need be but pouring unused coffee down the drain every morning can get old real quick.

Value and Quality

Of course you will want value for your dollar, in terms of the price of the coffee and espresso maker that you buy. However; if you are buying a feature laden machine that is extremely low in price you have to take its overall quality into close consideration. There are great machines out there that can give years of service but they tend to be the more expensive models.

Easy to Clean

Make sure that you select a coffee and espresso maker that is easy to clean. This might not seem like a big deal up front but it will be once you get your machine home and start using it. This particularly holds true if you have a teenager in your home, because inevitably you will end up cleaning the machine for two people if this is the case.

Espresso Coffee Grinders – Whats the Difference

So you finally got your espresso machine set up in your kitchen. Now you have the problem of providing the type of finely ground coffee that it needed to make fresh espresso. Of course you can always go the pre ground route but as everyone knows, fresh ground produces much tastier results.

Is a specialized Espresso Coffee Grinder Needed?

So will a standard coffee grinder work or do you have to buy an espresso coffee grinder, just for the purpose of creating the type of finely ground Coffee that is required for an espresso machine?

Get the Right Coffee Grinder

The simple answer to that question is both yes and no. That is, that you don’t have to search far and wide to get the grinder that you need as a standard electric coffee grinder will do the trick. That is if you know what to look for in a coffee grinder.

Basic Blade Categories

Electric coffee grinders are categorized into three basic types. Those types are electric blades, conical blades and blur blades. What texture of ground coffee your espresso coffee grinder produces will depend on the type of blades that you machine uses. Also, the speed of the blades will also factor into the equation as well.

Conical Burr Blades

Espresso coffee grinders will usually not have standard blur blades in them, as they tend to only spin at a rate of between 10,000-20,000 rpm. The most effective option is the conical blur blade. While this type of system will usually have a speed of only 500 rpm it does function as an effective espresso coffee grinder due to the fineness of the powdered coffee that it will produce.

A Wide range of prices

Espresso coffee grinders come in a very wide range of process that can start out at roughly $20 and go all the way up to as much as $1,500 for a commercial model. Remember that your espresso grinder will have to be cleaned regularly, so easy dismantling is one feature that you may want to consider.

Electric Coffee Grinders and Manual Coffee Grinders Compared

For decades, coffee was sold in sealed cans and came pre ground. Of course it always wasn’t this way, because in much earlier times our ancestors purchased unground beans and of course, ground them themselves. Canned pre ground beans were considered a convenience of the modern age, until someone discovered that fresh ground beans produced better tasting coffee.

A Step Back in Time

So, back to the home coffee grinder people went and where the arrived at, for the most part, was at their kitchen counters with an electric coffee grinder. However; some people stayed in the time machine longer than others and what they ended up with at their kitchen counters is what is known as the antique coffee grinder.

The Electric Coffee Grinder

Basically, there are a few major differences between the two styles of coffee grinders. Of course, the electric coffee maker operates with a motor that uses spinning blades to reduce the beans to ground coffee. Mechanically they function much like a miniature food blender.

The Antique coffee Grinder

The antique coffee grinder is not actually an antique, but rather a replica with an old fashioned look. However; they rely on the same mechanical system that older coffee grinders incorporated in them a century earlier. Its a metal wheel or a cone that is spun by a crank handle that does the actual grinding work.

It Sure looks Fun!

Sure it looks fun and for many people it is, but for someone who has a job to get to in the morning, antique Coffee grinders can get old real quick. Also, because they are crank operated they can’t be loaded and programmed to grind the coffee automatically in the morning like an electric coffee grinder can.
