    Coffee is not the second most legal traded commodity. Google Mark Pendergrast (author of Uncommon Grounds) and this fact, and you will see his research contradicts the statement made in his book. It is not even a 10th of oil or oil by products, and the meat industry is double its size.

    @lamrof, the story there goes that some Ethiopian goats accidentally ate some loose beans that would make coffee and to the huge surprise of their shepards danced around with such energy. Other parts of the world improved on coffee and America soon followed suit.

    Coffee was discovered in Ethiopia and drunk as a beverage in Ethiopia. Ethiopia still has some of the most complex and sought after coffee beans in the world. If you drunk the coffee they drink in Ethiopia you will think Starbucks coffee is piss. Its criminal what is sold to the simple minded American consumer as coffee. one word “garbage”

    @sludgedozer Moron, do you know what the fastest growing coffee chain is around the WORLD? Starbucks. Even in France, young people are helping Starbucks take off everywhere in paris. So much for that “French taste:, eh?

    I live in Canada and I remember people laughing at Starbucks before…Now it is the biggest coffee chain and the only competing Canadian chain failed miserably.

    P.S. Nice to know you are obsessed with the U.S. though… ;-)

    @Zeeboe some people even theorize that coffee helped produce the industrial revolution. because of the caffeine, but more importantly because to make coffee you need to boil or nearly boil water (killing germs in the process) so it made water safer and they did not have to use alcohol to clean the water (like they previously did when they drank lots of beer).
